To secure or retain control over a substantial amount or virtually all of a certain security or the stocks of a specific commodity so as to trigger an increase in the price of such security or commodity.

There comes a time when the price increase feeds on itself, as the short sellers of the security or the short traders on the commodity feel compelled to buy back the security or commodity to avoid being exposed to an even greater loss, which contributes to fostering the increase. In extreme situations, a person or a group holds a number of contracts requiring delivery of more of the security or commodity than is available for delivery.
