Underlying
A currency, commodity (for example a precious metal, oil), instrument (for example a stock, bond, futures or option contract) or variable (for example the price of a security or commodity, an exchange rate, interest rate or index of prices or rates) that is the subject of an option, a futures or forward contract or another derivative.
The term underlying may also be used as an adjective, for example underlying currency, underlying commodity, underlying instrument, underlying variable.
